I discovered mindfulness, self-care, and wellness when my career as a stressed and time-pressed Type A lawyer, an investment banker, and a digital communications professional overwhelmed me, caused burnout and depression, created anxiety and panic attacks, and did not produce the level of success I expected in the 1990s.
Mindfulness, self-care, and wellness became my lifelines. They helped me take small "baby steps" to rest and reflect, to restore my mental and physical health, to reimagine my life and career, to repair my relationships, and to redefine success. These small steps became my lifelong healing journey that was strengthened by the support of an African American woman therapist, my parents and family, and my close circle of friends, including my Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority sisters and classmates from Georgetown University Law Center, Howard University School of Law and Morgan State University.
During the early stages of my healing journey, I learned that being mindful, practicing self-care, and investing in my wellness are NOT selfish. They are in fact ESSENTIAL to my spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical well-being. They are the very things my ancestors wanted me to have in order to live and love freely, fully, and joyfully. This understanding shifted my mindset and became my TRUTH. It also helped me develop simple, easy, and affordable mindful self-care practices I use in my own life and work with clients. All of it laid a foundation for me to claim and express mindfulness, self-care, and wellness as my birthrights.
My healing journey has been filled with an abundance of personal and professional growth moments. As a result, I studied and became a certified yoga and mindfulness meditation teacher, a digital wellness educator, a reiki master practitioner, a sound healer, and an artist-in-residence for the Smith Center for Healing and the Arts at Howard University Hospital and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Today, my work draws on 30+ years of experience and the mindful self-care, creativity, and digital wellness practices I discuss in my three books, Love’s Troubadours, a yoga-inspired novel; That Which Awakens Me, a mindful creativity memoir; and Digital Sisterhood, a mindful technology memoir (available on Amazon). I continue to expand my knowledge in these areas and in Human Design.
